Atlanta transportation officials have posted updated preliminary plans for reconstructing the complex Flat Shoals Avenue intersection known as “The Spoke,” with design work currently expected to continue into early 2027.
The Atlanta Department of Transportation project covers the meeting of Flat Shoals Avenue, Arkwright Place, Walthall Street and Howell Drive. ATLDOT says the project may also include pedestrian and bicycle facilities connecting the intersection with the Atlanta BeltLine and existing multimodal routes.
What Is Being Designed?
ATLDOT describes the work as a full intersection reconstruction. The department’s project page links to preliminary plans dated July 1, 2026, following earlier community layouts and a “peanut concept” released in 2025.
The current project page identifies the work as Project 1117 in City Council District 5. It lists a $900,000 budget and $76,407.60 paid to date.
What Is The Current Timeline?
- Anticipated design finish: February 12, 2027.
- Anticipated construction start: May 14, 2027.
- Anticipated construction finish: January 2, 2029.
ATLDOT cautions that project schedules and scope are subject to change. The dates should therefore be treated as planning estimates rather than fixed construction commitments.
Why It Matters For East Atlanta
The Spoke is an unusual multi-street junction on the Flat Shoals corridor. A redesign could affect how drivers, pedestrians and cyclists move through the intersection and how the corridor connects with nearby multimodal infrastructure. Because construction is not currently scheduled to begin until 2027, residents still have time to review the preliminary materials and watch for future public updates.
What Is Still Unknown?
The final intersection configuration, construction phasing, traffic detours and the exact pedestrian or bicycle facilities have not yet been confirmed. Those details may change as design work advances.
